Providing your pet with good dental care is arguably one of the most important things that you can do for your pet’s longevity and well-being. We know that those animals who receive good dental care often live several years longer than those who don’t. Why wouldn’t you want that?
The Pet’s Place Animal Hospital invites you to learn all you need to know about the do’s and don’ts of pet dental care.
Dental care at home is paramount to your pet’s wellness. After all, despite our best intentions we can’t follow you home and care for your pet for you! Taking care of your pet’s teeth is multi-faceted.
Be sure to:
Take a look in your pet’s mouth often, if you can do so safely
Brush your pet’s teeth daily
Utilize dental rinses, chews treats, and diets recommended by the Veterinary Oral Health Council, which have been shown to be beneficial in pet dental health
That being said, if we told you that you could chew a piece of gum a day and never need to brush your teeth or visit the dentist, you would say we’re off of our rockers. The same holds true for our pet patients. No magical dental treat is going ever be able to replace a professional dental cleaning.
We play an essential role in your pet’s dental health. In order to help your pet live a longer life, professional dental care really needs to occur. There are two primary components to care at our hospital:
The annual oral exam – Try as you might, it is difficult to see your pet’s entire oral cavity. You are also not trained to notice early signs of disease. Let us examine your pet’s mouth at your annual wellness appointments so that we can address problems early.
Comprehensive dental cleanings – All pets, at some point or another, need to have a comprehensive oral examination and cleaning under anesthesia. Anesthesia allows us to easily see all parts of the mouth and further evaluate problems. During this type of procedure, ultrasonic tooth scaling, polishing, and fluoride treatment are conducted, as well as any necessary oral surgery.
Good dental care, both at home and at our hospital, can be a great asset to your pet’s quality of life. Banishing the dog's breath is just a bonus!
